Dear Parents
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope you had a restful break and a smooth start back to school. Last week I was fortunate to spend some time away in the quiet of the Gold Coast hinterland, an opportunity for a great deal of stillness, disconnect from technology and the busyness of life, and reflection. I return home and to school feeling renewed, bringing with me a fresh outlook and appreciation, knowledge and skills.
As we approach the end of the year there’s a lot to reflect on personally and as a community. We take the time to celebrate the growth and achievements of the year and reflect on areas that need further attention, there's excitement and anticipation in planning for a new year, and sadness as we say farewell to staff and students, particularly our Year 6 group and the families who say goodbye to MoGC for the final time.
AND, we still have eight weeks to go. A busy eight weeks that will make time seem to rush by. I hope in this time, we can regularly be mindful, to try to slow things down, take the time to pause and be grateful for what this year has provided, grateful for the work we’ve done and accomplishments we’ve made, and for the opportunities on the horizon.
2026 Student Leadership
In 2026 our student leadership structure will look different. Last term, I gathered feedback from our Year 5 and 6 students and staff regarding the processes we have followed for the past number of years. We followed a collaborative process of elements to Stop, Keep and Improve. A proposal was developed and taken to the MoGC Board for exploration and feedback.

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new term,
make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.
Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day
with the assurance that You walk through it with us.
Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness;

- $500 can fund farming tools for a community.
Day for Daniel
Friday October 31 is also Day for Daniel and students are invited to also wear a red shirt.
During Term 4 MoGC supports the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. On Friday, Paul Gates from the St. Vincent de Paul Society spoke to our community at assembly. He asked us to continue supporting the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. He talked about the work he does and explained what would be most helpful for people who seek the support from Vinnies.
He shared that Gift Cards are welcomed as they provide choice and enable companions to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and meats. Also welcomed are the following items:

Each class has a basket ready for collecting items, these will be handed over to Vinnies at the end of term, ready for Christmas.
The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary which is celebrated annually on October 7. Students learn how to pray the Rosary by joining Mrs. Simpson in the Church at second lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the month of October. The Hail Mary, which is the most used prayer in the rosary, is a prayer that is learnt as part of the Religion Curriculum in Year 1.
NORTH CAIRNS PARISH SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM

Welcome Emily Edward
This term we welcome a new School Officer, Miss Edward, to MoGC. Emily will be working with our Year 1 cohort.
Our 2026 staffing will soon be shared with families. When parents and students find out who the teachers for the following year will be, they sometimes have a preference for a particular choice. Be assured that class lists are determined after hours of deliberation, to do the best job possible, of getting the combinations of abilities, personalities and social needs balanced across the two classes. Class lists are developed and finalised well before the end of this term.
If you feel the need to provide information pertinent to this process, direct your request directly to Katherine Boot, via email, explaining the reasons for it: principal.nthcairns@cns.catholic.edu.au. While your request will be added to the many considerations, it is in no way a guarantee of placement.
On Tuesday, October 7 we welcomed our Prep 2026 families to MoGC with a BBQ and play in the junior areas. It was great to meet new families and catch up with current families who are sending another member of their family to MOGC next year! It was especially lovely to see our new families being welcomed and connecting with existing families.
Families had the opportunity to meet staff, ask questions, connect or reconnect with other families and receive their child’s transition ‘uniform’. It was an enjoyable evening, particularly seeing families taking the time to get to know each other. They are likely to be journeying together for at least the next seven years, some of them for 13 years or more!
Throughout Term 4, families visit each Wednesday morning, where students experience time in the classroom and become familiar with the school, and parents interact with each other and staff while hearing information about a range of topics. It’s always exciting to welcome our new families and eager students who are ready for ‘big school’.
Enrolments at Mother of Good Counsel are in demand, and we have waiting lists across a number of year levels. Last term, families were sent an electronic parent slip requesting enrolment intentions for 2026. Please respond to this slip as soon as possible, or if your intentions have changed, inform the office to assist with 2026 preparations, and a place can be offered to another family.
Year 3-6 Carnival
What a great day we had at Tobruk Pool at the end of last term! We were blessed with sunny weather and a cool breeze for most of the day, with a few sprinkles of rain. Our students showed sportsmanship, encouragement and resilience, and were busy throughout the day with a fantastic schedule.
It was great to see attendance high and students pushing themselves, out of their comfort zone, to participate in their events. Thank you to those students who attended to cheer on their teammates and participate in the novelties. Each student's attendance supported their team by adding an extra point to the totals.
Thanks to the parents who attended this event; for your ongoing support of your children and our school. It was great to have so many family members at the pool. A great day was had by everyone!
A huge thank you goes to every staff member present. Everyone had jobs to do, did the set up and pack up efficiently, and was busy throughout the day, ensuring that events ran smoothly, and that everyone was safe.
While everyone had a win of some sort on the day, the final scores were:
1st - Savannah: 449
2nd - Barron: 411
3rd - Palmer: 327

Name all items.
Last term, MoGC participated in the Jamie Gosling Football Academy School Competition and the Mary Mill’s Netball Competition Gala Days, competing against other local primary schools Students in Year 5 and 6 nominated and spent lunchtimes training to prepare themselves for the events.
At MoGC students are encouraged to have a red hot go in all they do. Some students who took part in these gala events hadn’t played the sport before, and now wish to take part in the sport at a club level outside of school. Some students already played and shared their skills with team mates both on and off the court/field. Most importantly however, every student who took part learnt to work together, as a team, fostering sportsmanship and resilience to achieve a shared goal. We are very proud of those who took part, for representing themselves, each other and MoGC in the way they did.
Thank you to the staff and parents who supported our students at their events. In particular, Mr Marc Jennings, who trained our soccer teams at lunch time and coached the teams on the day, and to those parents who supported their child/ren on the competition days.
Many successes were seen at both competitions. A special mention to our Mixed Netball Team. Congratulations on your success in taking out the Mary Mills Under 12 Mixed winners. What an achievement!
Soccer Gala Day. Written by Clem and Scarlett (Year 5)
During Term 3, MOGC participated in a soccer gala day tournament hosted by the Jamie Gosling Football Academy. MOGC entered two mixed teams. These teams were coached and supervised by Mr. Jennings and Mr. Baynes. We are very grateful for that time and support leading up to the carnival, without them it would not have been possible.
On the day of the Gala day Team A played around six games and Team B played four. The whole day was dedicated to fun, skill and socialising with new people. Together we made fun memories and experiences. Together we worked as a team, by supporting and cheering on teammates and congratulating everyone, whether it was a win or loss. Everyone had so much fun because everyone participated and had a good attitude.
In the summary, we all had fun and challenges that we all faced together as a team. We MOGC, played well and had fun and we loved how we had an opportunity to participate. We are very grateful for this experience and hope to have the chance again next year.
Mary Mills Netball Written by Sophie D
Wow, what an unforgettable day! The netball Gala Day on the last day of Term 3 was nothing short of amazing. We all could hardly contain our excitement as we gathered at the courts, ready to showcase the hard work we had put in at lunch times this term.
We kicked off the day with energy and enthusiasm. Our first match was intense, but we quickly found our rhythm, winning four out of five games! The only game we didn’t win ended in a draw, but we played like champions. Each of us knew what we had to do, and it felt incredible to see how well we worked together as a team. Huge shout out to Mrs. Haines for being our team manager and Umpire Jess. Your motivational words and frozies cups really hit the spot.
One of the highlights was our semi-final match against Holy Cross. The atmosphere was electric! Quade, Anna, and Nathan were phenomenal, making precise passes that kept the ball moving smoothly down the court. Ashayda, Tiara and Gina were like walls in defence, stopping almost every attempt at a goal from the other team, and Mia held her ground as our goal defence, always ready to intercept.
When we made it to the finals against Good Counsel Innisfail, - we could hardly believe it! The game was tough, but we were determined to win. Sophie and Quade were on shooting fire, goal after goal. With incredible accuracy, we ended up taking the game 8-4! The cheers from our supporters, especially from Ms. Boot, who came to watch us, echoed in our ears and made the victory even sweeter.
Throughout the day, it was clear that sportsmanship and communication was key. We congratulated each other and our opponents, showing respect and camaraderie no matter the score. It was fantastic to see how well we all worked together, supporting one another on and off the court.
A huge thank you to our teachers and admin for their support leading up to this day. We couldn't have done it without your encouragement and guidance. A special shout-out to Ms Boot for being there to cheer us on during the finals. It made us feel like true champions!
As we wrapped up the day, we couldn't help but feel proud of our team. We played hard, we played fair, and most importantly, we played together, with honour and truth, the MOGC way.
What a way to end the term!

Helping Your Child to Identify and Express Their Emotions
As adults, we’ve had some time to understand our emotions, what they mean and how to express them, but it can still be quite difficult. For children, it’s even harder and almost non existent as they’re still developing and not at the stage where they completely understand their emotions and how to handle them. They need to learn from us!
It’s incredibly important to help your child to identify and deal with their emotions, and provide the space and opportunity to express how they feel and let them it’s ok to do so.
We need to let our children know it’s healthy to talk about emotions and feelings, and modelling this to your child is a great start.
Ways to help your child identify and express their emotions
Model calm behaviour
If you’re feeling worked up, take a moment to calm yourself before responding. This will model to your child to do the same when faced with situations that are frustrating.
Talk about how feelings can be expressed
Set a good example and let them know feelings can be expressed through communicating and talking about it. Encourage them to express themselves whenever possible and let you know how they’re feeling by using their words.
Teach skills to nurture inner strength
This can include teaching and modelling a growth mindset and positive thinking, self belief and self discipline.
Name the feeling
Naming each feeling is the first step to helping your child identify them. When they’re having a meltdown, calmly ask what they are currently feeling and say it out loud. Is it sadness? Anger? Embarrassment? This helps them to become more in tune with each emotion.
Identify feelings in others
Having empathy, and understanding other people’s emotions is also important. A great way to do this is through cartoons or books. Ask questions like “How do you think they are feeling?” “How would you feel if that happened to you?”
Happy Families
Time Is Love: Why Being Present Matters More Than Ever
In the whirlwind of school runs, work meetings, laundry piles, and life’s endless to-do lists, it’s easy for family time to fall to the bottom of our priorities. We’re “there” with our children, but are we truly with them?
One powerful truth from our family’s journey—and from years of research and real-world parenting—is this: To our kids, love is spelled T-I-M-E.
The Surprising Thing Our Kids Told Us
In our home, we’ve developed a simple but powerful tradition we call PPIs—Personal Parenting Interviews. It began with a parenting checklist that challenged us to see ourselves through our children’s eyes. Questions like:
- Do my parents listen to me with genuine interest?
- Do they spend time with me just because they want to?
- Do I feel like they care about what’s important to me?
Wanting honest answers, my wife, Kylie, nervously sat down with our kids and asked them directly what we were doing well as parents, what wasn’t working, and how we could improve. It was raw and real. Sometimes confronting. But it brought deep connection—and clarity.
Their answers? What mattered most wasn’t perfection. It wasn’t expensive holidays, big birthday parties, or how much we earned.
What they cherished most was simple: time.
Time to talk. Time to play. Time to cry, laugh, or walk together. Time where they felt seen and heard—not rushed or “fit in” between everything else.
The Challenge for All of Us
It can feel overwhelming to add “spending more time with the kids” to an already overloaded schedule. But this isn’t about adding more pressure. It’s about recognising what actually makes the biggest difference.
Your children want your presence. They want you. YOU. Because you’re that big and important in their lives!.
Even teenagers—those fiercely independent, eye-rolling, door-slamming teens—still crave connection. One of our older daughters recently asked for a walk along the beach after a long day. I was exhausted. I almost said no. But I got up and went. Five kilometres and one heart-to-heart later, she was all smiles—and so was I.
What Can You Do Right Now?
Here are a few simple ways you can start prioritising time and connection in your family, even in small, meaningful doses:
1. Create Moments, Not Events
You don’t need hours—sometimes just 10–15 minutes of undivided attention means the world. A bedtime chat. A shared joke. A walk around the block. A spontaneous milkshake run. A choice to ignore your phone, the red notifications, the emails, and the addictive algorithm for five minutes so you can spend it with your child.
2. Ask These 3 Questions
Start your own version of the “PPI” with your kids:
- What’s going well?
- What’s not?
- How can we do better?
You might be surprised by what they say—and how seen they feel just by being asked.
3. Be Interruptible
Sometimes connection comes at inconvenient times—like when you’re falling into bed or reading a book. If they’re reaching out, consider pausing the task and tuning in. These moments matter. (Note – they are often unlikely to interrupt you on a device. And you are unlikely to budge when you’re on one. Be careful with how screens make you appear to your child.)
4. Make Time Their Way
Each child connects differently. One might want to chat. Another prefers side-by-side activities like cooking or gaming. Follow their lead.
5. Remember: It’s Not Forever
The days can feel long, but the years are short. Before we know it, they’ll be grown. And what they’ll remember most isn’t how clean the house was, but whether we were there—really there.
Just like dollars are the currency of our economy, connection (feeling seen, heard, and valued) is the currency of our relationships.
Parenting isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. In a world full of distractions and pressures, choosing to give our children our time is one of the most powerful ways we say “I love you.”
So tonight, even if you’re tired, pause for a moment. Ask a question. Play that card game. Sit on the edge of their bed and just listen.
Because in your child’s eyes, love is spelled T-I-M-E—and that’s what they’ll remember.
